Short Biography |
Dr. Jun Zhu is a Bosch AI professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at
Tsinghua University. He is an IEEE/AAAI Fellow. He was an adjunct faculty at Carnegie Mellon University from 2015 to 2018.
His principal research interests lie in the development of statistical machine learning methods for solving
scientific and engineering problems arising from artificial learning, reasoning, and
decision-making in the dynamic worlds. Prof. Zhu received his B.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Tsinghua University in 2005 and 2009, respectively.
He did post-doctoral research in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University from 2009 to 2011.
His current work involves both the foundations of statistical learning, including theory and algorithms for probabilistic methods,
Bayesian methods, adversarial learning and deep learning; and the applications in data mining, computer vision, and multi-media analysis.
Prof. Zhu has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in the prestigious conferences and journals, including ICML, NeurIPS, KDD, JMLR, PAMI, etc.
He is an associate editor-in-chief for IEEE Trans. on PAMI, and associate editors for Artificial Intelligence and Acta Automatica Sinica.
He served as area chair/senior PC
for ICML (2014-2021), NeurIPS (2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020), IJCAI (2013-2021), UAI (2014-2019), and AAAI (2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021).
He was a local co-chair of ICML2014 and workshop co-chair of ICML2021. He is a recipient of Microsoft Fellowship (2007), CCF Distinguished PhD Thesis Award (2009),
IEEE Intelligent Systems "AI's 10 to Watch" Award (2013), NSFC Excellent Young Scholar Award (2013), CCF Young Scientist Award (2013),
MIT TR35 China (2017), ICME 2018 best paper award, and XPlorer Prize (2020). His work is supported by the National Youth top-notch Talents Program
and the "221 Basic Research Plan for Young Talents" at Tsinghua.

A little more about me |
I got my B.E, MS and Ph.D degrees of computer science, all from Tsinghua University, in 2005, 2007 and 2009, respectively. My thesis advisor was Prof. Bo Zhang.
From 2004 to 2007, I spent about three years at Microsoft Research Asia,
where I worked with Dr. Zaiqing Nie, Dr. Ji-Rong Wen, Dr. Lei Zhang, Dr. Wei-Ying Ma, and many others; and I also got the `once-in-a-lifetime'
chance to visit Mr. Bill Gates (see this newspaper).
After that, I got the support from
Chinese government to visit the Sailing Lab directed by Prof. Eric P. Xing in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and very luckily I was invited
to visit CMU again in 2008.
After graduation, I moved to CMU as a post-doctoral researcher, innovation fellow, and project scientist (can you find me in this picture?).
I worked with Prof. Eric P. Xing at the MLD department, and I also worked with Prof. Li Fei-Fei at Stanford University on several interesting projects.
In the September of 2011, I returned to where I started my research career. |
